Banksia robur - swamp banksia

APPEARANCE : Classic Australian native banksia with large oval leaves russet underneath; metallic green buds open into gold candles and big gold nectar-filled flowers in summer lasting to winter. Rust-coloured new leaves complement the flower. Will regrow after fire.
ORIGIN :Native to the east coast from Cooktown to Wollongong
USE FOR: Looks good in grouped plantings. Excellent coastal plant, able to tolerate frost and salt spray. Wildlife gardens, riverbanks, revegetation. Seed pods are decorative, as are the flowers.
PLANTING : Plant in a well drained sandy or loam soil with neutral-acid pH and regular water.  Will tolerate moist, even wet, soil in full sun.
CARE : Prune as required to maintain compact growth. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser during spring - Banksia are phosphorus-sensitive so the P ratio of the fertiliser needs to be under 3%. Banksia robur is less sensitive than other species.
