Hamelia patens - hummingbird bush, Mexican firebush
DESCRIPTION: Bird-attracting shrub flowering in orange-red clusters most of the year. Flowers are followed by small red fruit. Leaves become purplish-red during winter. Related to coffee plants.
USE IN: Informal hedge or screening plant. Beautiful for attracting birdlife to the garden.
LOCATION: Plant in well drained soil in a full sun to partly shaded position in the garden. Drought and heat tolerant. Can die back and regrow after light frost.
CARE: Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks. Prune after flowering to promote dense growth habit and flowering next season. Provide plenty of water during dry spells. Apply a slow release fertiliser during spring.
HEIGHT AND WIDTH: Up to 3m H x 3m W.
YOUR PLANTS: These are tube-stock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The average size of your plants will be 15 -25 cm in height including the pot height of 80 mm x 42 mm wide.
*May become prone to aphids when stressed, these can be easily controlled by applying eco-neem.
