This native tree is called the Brisbane wattle, but it's found right along the east coast, through NSW, and around the mainland into Victoria. It likes to mix it up with the gumtrees in the wild, and thrives in tropical or dry climates, and light frost.

Those fluffy golden pompoms appear from midwinter through into late spring, depending on the location; and it makes a great hedge if hard-pruned. Drought tolerant but flowers better with regular rainfall. Bees love it, and the seedpods are tasty snacks for local birds!

Description

Acacia fimbriata - Brisbane wattle, fringed wattle

APPEARANCE : Fast-growing native wattle, forms a large shrub or small tree. Long slender green leaves; and from winter into spring abundant bright yellow scented pompom flowers in dense clusters. Thee are followed by runner-bean like pods.
USE FOR : Can be hard pruned for informal hedging. Fast colour, winter colour, feature shrub in native gardens. Pollinator attracting; birds eat the seeds
CLIMATE : Frost and drought tolerant. Flowers better with regular rainfall. Grows along the east coast from Mackay down through NSW, VIC.
PLANTING : Plant in well-drained soil in full sun. Prefers light sandy soils but will grow in clay. Self-seeds, so do not plant near any natural bushlands or waterways, especially in areas with reliable rainfall.
CARE : Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks, and protect from frost while young. Responds well to pruning if you need to - use the branches for decor indoors; apply a slow release native fertiliser afterwards to promote healthy growth.
HEIGHT & WIDTH : 5-8 m H x 4-6 m W.
