Wormwood - Artemisia
Gandalf-grey, ancient and resilient, this deceptively soft herbal helper has for centuries thrived around arid rocky sites and beside primitive settlements.
For lovers of dry-climate gardening, it's is a rock-solid, cold-hardy, sun-loving shrub that pioneers into unpromising ground.
For wise women and budding botanic healers it's a multipass of medicinal remedies, from fighting fleas and fungus to battling bad breath and blue moods.
And for hedonists, it's a beer brewers' boost and the essential ingredient in every 19th century flaneur's drinks cabinet, the source of the Green Fairy herself - absinthe.
