Asparagus 'Mary Washington'
APPEARANCE : Tall ferny perennial vegetable harvested for its firm young shoots. Mary Washington is a high-yielding easy to grow variety for lots of spears through spring-summer. The product supplied is called a 'crown' - the growing roots of the plant - not a bulb.
PLANTING: Plant direct outside in winter-spring in full sun, well drained neutral pH soil, and lots of organic matter - about one bucket per square metre.
CARE: Water regularly to help it establish and keep it growing strong. Keep the bed weed-free and pick off any snails or beetles. Harvest spears regularly. Leave foliage to yellow in autumn and cut down to soil level for winter. Mulch generously and apply 100g of slow release fertiliser per square metre in the spring.
