Birds nest ferns grow in an upright rosette of long apple-green shiny leaves. In the wild they settle in the branches of trees, but you can plant them in borders and pots. Australasicum is taller, more upright in shape, with slightly broader leaves than others

Asplenium australasicum - bird's nest fern

APPEARANCE : Large growing fern with leathery foliage, each frond may reach between 1-2 metres on mature plants.
USE FOR : Tropical garden settings as a feature using layers in under planting. May also be set in the fork of a large tree to create a truly natural forest setting. Suited to containers and indoor gardens.
PLANTING: Plant in a full sun to partly shaded position ensuring the crown of the fern is above the soil line. The growing medium needs to be well drained to allow for plenty of air movement around the roots and avoid wet feet. Remove old fronds to keep plants looking fresh and avoid disease. Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks.
CARE: Protect from frost and keep moist during dry periods. Ferns thrive in humid conditions, provide frequent watering during the warmer months and less during winter. Apply a slow release fertiliser during spring and a liquid based fertiliser every 4 weeks during the warmer months, take care to dilute your solution to half the recommended dose to avoid burn. Re-pot container plants only if they are outgrowing their pots.
HEIGHT & WIDTH:  1 - 2 m H.
YOUR PLANTS : These are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide. May be supplied as 'plugs', slightly smaller than our usual tubestock but with a healthy root system ready for planting or potting on. You can see an example in the image gallery
