Thanks to the rescuers at NSW Saving our Species, a tiny community of less than 15 wild plants has been saved and propagated to preserve the species for our wild places and our gardens.
This super-rare banksia is now available to grow in our back yards, and with its low wide profile, and deep orange flowers tipped in burgundy, it's going to look striking in rockeries, around trees, down banks and slopes and in your front garden.
Banksia vincentia
APPEARANCE: Rare native low mounding shrub with large deep orange cylindrical flowers, and slender tufty green needlelike leaves. Naturally dense and bushyUSES: Year-round foliage shrub. Wildlife refuge and source of nectar. Help conserve this critically endangered species
PLANTING: Plant in well-drained soil, neutral to acid pH, in a sunny spot. Doesn't like wet feet or high humidity.
CARE:Banksia is very phosphorus-sensitive so the P ratio of the fertiliser needs to be under 3%. Only feed once the plant is established. Water carefully to establish it - don't let it dry out but don't overwater it. Accounts differ as to how much cold it can stand so shelter your plants for the first couple of years, especially in exposed sites where light frost might occur.
HEIGHT & WIDTH: 50cm-75cm H x 1-2m W.
YOUR PLANTS : These are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
You can see an example in the image gallery.
