Big bold dramatic bromeliad, a large-sized waist-high rosette of gunmetal grey, flushed and shaded with wine-purple, which produces a deep maroon flowering spike well over head-height on mature plants..

Very impressive when full-grown, and a striking indoor plant when small (or when big, if you have the space...)

Alcantarea imperialis 'Silver Plum' - bromeliad

APPEARANCE : Big-sized bromeliad with a large rosette of dark silver-grey leaves flushed deep purple-red underneath and in the centre of the rosette. Please note your tubestock may arrive green and will soon develop the distinctive colours as it grows.
USE FOR: Suited to large pots, indoors and out, and tropical or subtropical gardens.
CLIMATE : Protect from frost. Bromeliads love warm and humid conditions.
PLANTING : Plant in free draining soil in pots or out in the garden, taking care to keep the crown above the soil. Enjoys sunny to shaded positions, colour is stronger in good light. Site carefully as this is a big bromeliad when full-grown.
CARE : Water by filling the centre of the plant with rainwater or filtered water. Fertilise during spring with an organic liquid feed mixed at half rate. If your bromeliad starts to flower - congratulations! The flower can last up to a year. You may spot smaller baby bromeliads - pups - around the base of the main plant. These will continue to grow and may flower themselves in time. All you need to do is enjoy it for now. Once the flowerspike has died back - which may take a few months - you can then unpot the plant and separate off the pups for potting on, if you wish, or just leave them in place
HEIGHT & WIDTH : 1m H x 1m W.
YOUR PLANTS : These are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
You can see an example in the image gallery.
