Pitcairnia sanguinea - bromeliadAPPEARANCE : Colombian rainforest bromeliad with a large rosette of long pointed soft dark green leaves with maroon-purple undersides and central rib (technically blood red, which is what 'sanguinea' means). Please note your tubestock may arrive green and will develop the distinctive colours as it grows. Mature plants produce a longlasting central red flower spike like a feather plume.
USE FOR: Suited to large pots, indoors and out, and tropical or subtropical gardens.
PLANTING: Plant in light free draining soil in pots or out in the garden, taking care to keep the crown above the soil. Enjoys lots of light, morning sun, lots of humidity. Keep above 15C
CARE: Water frequently in warmer months, less so in winter when growth slows. After flowering bromeliads generally begin to die back. By this time plants will have developed 'pups' at the base which will take the place of the original plant. Fertilise during growing months with an organic liquid feed mixed at half rate.
HEIGHT & WIDTH: 80cm H x 60cm W.
YOUR PLANTS: These plants are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide. May be supplied as 'plugs', slightly smaller than our usual tubestock but with a healthy root system ready for planting or potting on. You can see an example in the image gallery
