Camellia sinensis - green tea
Camellia sinensis, the plant behind green tea, is an evergreen shrub grown for its glossy, dark green leaves that are harvested to make fresh, flavourful tea with lots of health benefits.
It thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic soil with plenty of sun or light shade, and regular pruning keeps it healthy and encourages new leaf growth perfect for brewing. With delicate white flowers adding seasonal charm, it’s ideal for home gardens or large pots.
To make green tea from fresh Camellia sinensis leaves, simply pick young, tender leaves, rinse, then steep in hot (not boiling) water for 2–3 minutes. Strain and enjoy fresh, or let cool for iced tea. Store your tea leaves in an airtight container.
