Physalis peruviana - Cape gooseberry - seed

DESCRIPTION: Leggy herbacous annual/perennial from Peru and Chile, with soft pale green leaves and cream flowers that develop into paper lanterns in autumn. Each lantern contains a small golden fruit like a cherry tomato, with a tart flavour.
PLANTING: Sow spring and summer at around 20-25C direct into final position, cover with 5mm of soil, keep moist until seedlings emerge. Germination rates can be low. Thin and transplant at approx 10cm in height. Plant in full sun and sandy loam for early harvest and strong growth.
CARE: Prepare soil prior to planting with well composted manure, mulch plants to retain moisture in the soil. Water weekly. For a bumper crop apply liquid fertiliser every two weeks
