Slowgrowing easygoing conifer that will be a beautiful potted plant or mini Christmas tree for years before it gets too big and needs planting out. Alternatively plant it out - it's happy almost anywhere - and it probably won't need any more attention in your lifetime. Blue-green foliage flushes red-purple in cold weather, which is cheerful.
Chamaecyparis thyoides 'Red Star' - white cedar
APPEARANCE : Dwarf slowgrowing conifer with dense fluffy-looking blue-green foliage that turns a deep reddish-purple in cold winters.
USE FOR : Perfect for low hedging or feature planting. Try growing in a container and use as an alternative Christmas tree.
PLANTING : Plant in full sun. Grows well in well-drained acid to neutral soil. The parent plant can tolerate wet soil and grows in wetland areas, but you might want to test this out. Totally frost hardy to Antarctic levels.
CARE: Mulch and water well during dry periods. Otherwise carefree.
