Classic cottage garden favourite, gently coloured in a mix of pink and white shades, and gently scented too. Lovely threaded through spring and summer borders, or cut and enjoyed in the home.

Dianthus barbatus ' Herald of Spring' - sweet William - seed

DESCRIPTION: Hardy perennial or annual with slender green ferny leaves and a mix of pink and bi-colour flowers, sometimes fringed, or with contrasting centres. 'Barbatus' means 'bearded', from the ferny collar of leaves around each flowerbud.
PLANTING: Spring and Summer, for hotter parts of Australia winter planting is recommended at around 15C. Sow seeds into pots containing seed raising mix, gently press into soil and keep moist. Thin seedlings when plants have 2-4 leaves, plant in free draining soil in a full sun location for best flowering.
CARE: Water seedlings regularly until established and continue to provide water especially during dry spells. Mulch plants to keep the shallow roots cool in summer. For an extra long flowering season, remove spent blooms and feed with liquid fertiliser.
