This strange native shrub looks like something from a Tim Burton movie during the warmer months, when those long pointy claw-like leaves - for that's what they are - are silhouetted against blue sky.
Come midwinter, and beaked hakea is transformed into a giant cloud of white curls. much more Disney princess. It's a welcome place for wildlife to snuggle safely, and snack on the nectar; and it's great for security hedging too, with those sharp leaves.
Hakea rostrata - beaked hakea, turkey gobbler
APPEARANCE: Native large shrub found in SA, VIC and TAS. Leaves are more like stems : long green smooth slender, sharply pointed at the end. Abundant white curly flowers tucked between each leaf close to the stem, during late winter and spring.USE FOR : Feature shrub, informal hedging, security hedging, native gardens, to attract beneficial pollinators, as wildlife refuge. Avoid planting close to buildings or near sewer pipes.
PLANTING: For best flowering, plant in full sun, which will also encourage denser growth. Thrives in most kinds of free draining soil, especially sandy. Tolerates light frost and drought once established; soft growth may be affected but the roots will be unharmed.
CARE: Water regularly until established. Mulch plants to retain moisture in the soil. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser during spring - Hakea species can be phosphorus-sensitive so the P ratio of the fertiliser needs to be under 3%. An annual light prune encourages denser growth
