This dark green-blue-purple hedging holly is rock-solid cold hardy, grows in sunshine, and looks moodily magnificent all year round. Grow it as a feature shrub, or a handsome and dense evergreen privacy hedge. Heck is German for hedge, and this is definitely a hecking good hedging plant.
Ilex aquifolium x rugosa Heckenblau® - Meserve holly, blue holly APPEARANCE : Evergreen ornamental shrub, fast-growing for a holly. Pointed-oval glossy leaves with softly spiny edges are burgundy when new, turning deep green in summer and deep plum with a dark bluish tint in winter. Stems are dark purple-brown; flowers are small, opening white from pale pink buds. Good male pollinator for other holly varieties. Meserve hollies are hybrids originally created by Kathleen K Meserve, of Japanese and English hollies, to give cold hardiness and beautiful foliage. USE FOR : Screening, feature shrub-tree. Excellent security hedging. Cut the stems and berries for home decoration. PLANTING : Tolerates full sun if watered regularly, and given some afternoon shade in hot summers. Prefers slightly acidic, moist, well-drained rich soils; but generally happy in most garden conditions. Mulch and water on a regular basis, until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks. Antarctic levels of cold tolerance. CARE : Gentle pruning to shape the plant if necessary, and for plants grown in deep shade. Supplementary water in drought periods.
