Kunzea baxteri nana 'Mandy's Surprise' - dwarf scarlet kunzea, dwarf crimson kunzea

APPEARANCE: The parent species is a WA native, like a leggy open Callistemon, with very small neat leaves and red bottlebrush flowers mainly in spring. Mandy popped up around twenty years ago as a surprise in a row of otherwise normally-sized baxteri, and immediately caught the eye of keen native gardeners. She usually flowers earlier too, from the beginning of winter in some locations.
USE IN:  For informal low hedging and borders, low water gardens, native and wildlife gardens, winter colour.
PLANTING: Plant in a full sun to partly shaded position in very free-draining soil in the garden. Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks. Prefers dry sandy soil and a dry coastal climate but may grow in subtropical gardens, or in richer free-draining soils. Should come through a light frost once established and mature.
CARE:  Drought hardy but water during prolonged dry spells to maintain health. Apply a slow release fertiliser during spring, and seaweed solution seasonally.
