Loofah - seed
Grow your own bath scrub! Vegetable sponges from the garden to use in the shower or bathtub as natural exfoliators - very sustainable and longlasting.
You can also eat the gourds if you pick them while still young; they're popular in Vietnamese and various Indian cuisines, and are reminiscent of zucchini.

Luffa loofah - seed
DESCRIPTION: Gourd vine that produces long hanging fruits that when dried, resemble a sea sponge. Leave them to dry on the vine, peel the skin and the flesh will disappear leaving the fibrous skeleton. (That was gory...!)
PLANTING: Sow direct or into pots for later transplanting at 20C+, as soon as it is warm enough in spring. Scarifyng (lightly scratching) the seed and soaking overnight may help germination.
CARE: Keep moist through germination and while growing. Water and feed regularly through the growing period. Frost tender, requires at least 150 sunny days to ripen (which shouldn't be a problem for most of us)
