Our other maranta is a very striking affair, demanding attention with bold striped and contrst colours. This one is much more subtle with its appeal, the gentle contrast of dark and light green creating a graphic pattern that some think looks like rabbit tracks. 

Prayer plants get their name because the leaves fold up at night, as if in prayer. It's a lovely lounge room greenery, and if you live somewhere frost-free, a lush shade border underplanting too.

Maranta leuconeura var kerchoveana, Maranta kerchoveana - prayer plant

APPEARANCE : Leafy tropical foliage plant with patterned bright green leaves spotted with dark green in a regular central pattern. Plants fold their leaves up at night as if in prayer.
USE FOR : Ideal container plant for a shaded patio, accent planting in tropical gardens, or indoors. Suited to underplanting. 
PLANTING: Plant in a shady spot with indirect sunlight. Prefers moisture-retaining soil or a good quality potting mix. Enjoys humid air.
CARE: Water regularly during the first 12 weeks and regularly once established. Mist regularly if air humidity is low. Apply a slow release fertiliser yearly and liquid feed every three months for vibrant healthy foliage. Remove the old leaves for a quick tidy up.
