You'll see this in fancy florists - and you can grow it in your garden! It's easy to grow in any soil, and creates a tall apple-green accent among brighter flowers; if you enjoy flower arranging you can use those blooms fresh or dried.

Moluccella laevis - Bells of Ireland, molucca

DESCRIPTION: Tall pale green plant with long spires; the true insignificant white flowers are hidden inside the funnel-shaped green cases.
PLANTING: Sow in Winter in warmer climates, Spring in cooler ones, at around 13-180C into trays or direct. sow on the soil surface, press in gently. When large enought to handle transplant to final position.
CARE: Water seedlings regularly until established and continue to provide water especially during dry spells. Mulch plants to keep the shallow roots cool in summer. For an extra long flowering season, remove spent blooms and feed with liquid fertiliser.
