Except this unusual pitcher plant only occurs in the wild in two tiny locations in coastal Thailand, where it hangs out in open grassland.

Like the Vikings, it's a great breeder and readily hybridises with other species. And like the Vikings it's pretty tough (for a pitcher plant), so you don't have to be quite as fussy with the water quality or schedule.

It's also fast to colour up from young plants, so you'll get to enjoy a mature plant sooner!

Description

Nepenthes mirabilis var globosa 'Viking' - pitcher plant
APPEARANCE: Carnivorous epiphytic plant, growing in a low arching rosette of glossy leaves, often gently rippled along the edges, which develop into codpiece-like tubes at the end filled with bug-dissolving enzymes. Viking has fat round pitchers ('globosa' = like a globe), red or red-patterned in colour when mature, at the end of each leaf, on very long stems. These pitchers have prominent cap and and wings said to resemble a Viking ship. Found in the wild in Thailand, in sandy open lowland sites, and only named for science in 2007.
USE FOR: Interesting and unusual indoor plant, perfect in bathroom environments; or outdoors in tropical zones.
PLANTING: An orchid mix is ideal, with chunks of bark, sphagnum moss or coir to let air to the roots and drain away water fast.
CARE: Loves it humid and warm, definitely above 10C at night, ideally between 18C and 28C. Mist them regularly to keep them happy; water often with rainwater or filtered water so they're always moist, but don't let them get soggy. Once a year a mature plant might need a pick-me-up, feed with diluted orchid feed.
