This beautiful rainforest native deserves a place in every garden that has space for it. It has huge glossy dark green leaves all year in warm locations, making a very handsome sight. In late summer and autumn, clusters of pure white flowers burst out of the branches and trunk, covering the bark, and scenting the air with pineapple (or pina colada, depending on your points of reference...)

Phaleria clerodendron - scented Daphne

DESCRIPTION: Small tree or large shrub native to the rainforests of FNQ. Huge glossy evergreen leaves, clusters of pineapple-scented white flowers appear mostly in autumn, and often at other times of the year, directly out of the branches and trunk. This unusual pattern is called "cauliflory". The flowers are followed by red plum-sized berries which birds (including cassowaries) love.
USES: Feature planting, impressing friends and neighbours, saving the cassowaries.
PLANTING: Plant in moist soil in sun or shade positions in the garden. Site it where you can enjoy the rich fruity scent. Will grow in tropical and frost-free subtropical gardens as far south as Sydney.
CARE: Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks. Water in dry periods and if soil is dry. Prune as required after flowering to maintain shape, and fertilise with a slow release fertiliser in spring.
HEIGHT & WIDTH: 4m-8m H x 4m W.
YOUR PLANTS: These are tubestock plants with young healthy roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 42 mm wide and 80 mm high.
