This bold firework of a plant is compact enough to slip into almost any garden size (even a balcony pot) and still bring all the drama and attention of its twice-the-size cousins. Phormiums are really rugged and hardy, especially in coastal sites, and they love dry sunny spots and light sandy soils.

Phormium tenax 'Black Rage' - New Zealand flax

APPEARANCE : Sword-leaf rosette plant with dark chocolate leaves, silvery on the underside, slightly arched rather than upright. Mature plants may produce a tall branched flowerspike of dark red buds and lemon yellow petals
USE FOR : Accent plant, mixed garden beds, containers, coastal gardens, exposed sites (though leaves may fray).
CLIMATE : Tolerates frost once established.
PLANTING : Super hardy and suited to most soil types.  Plant in full sun to part shade in free draining soil. More light gives darker leaf colour. Apply mulch and water regularly during the first 12 weeks until the plant is established. Provide additional water during extended dry periods. We recommend planting in well drained soil as flax can be prone to stem rot in boggy or clay soil.
CARE : Easy care plant, simply remove old foliage, apply mulch and fertilise yearly with a slow release fertiliser or well composted manure.
HEIGHT & WIDTH : 0.8 - 1m H x 1- 1.2m W.
YOUR PLANTS : These are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
You can see an example in the image gallery.
