Pittosporums make beautiful hedges and privacy screens. Their small neat leaves are glossy and bright, contrasting with dark stems; their habit is dense enough to shelter small native birds, but not thick and gloomy; and they respond very well to clipping, while staying neat when left alone. Silver Sheen has attractively silvery-green leaves year round.

Description

Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Silver Sheen'

APPEARANCE : Fast growing hedging shrub; leaves are tiny, silver-green, on almost-black stems.
USE IN : Hedges, privacy screens, topiary.
PLANTING : Plant in well drained soil of any kind, in full sun or part shade. Leaf and stem colour is brighter when grown in sun. Will grow better in a sheltered location protected from stiff coastal breezes and hard frost.
CARE : Fertilise with a slow release fertiliser in spring and again in autumn. Regular pruning is required to maintain shape and compact growth. Will regrow after a hard prune if necessary. Water frequently until plant is established, and during dry spells as it doesn't like drying out. Mulch well in winter in very frosty locations to keep the roots warm.
