If you've always wanted a poinsettia plant in your back yard but your winter temperatures drop to single digits, try Viking Red.

Euphorbia pulcherrima ‘Viking’ - poinsettia

APPEARANCE : Open bushy medium-large shrub with brightly coloured red leaves - called bracts - in winter months. Commercially grown for seasonal home decor and potted colour.
ORIGIN : Central America, especially Mexico
USE FOR : As showy seasonal indoor plants; outside for winter colour in subtropical climates
CLIMATE : Frost free, warm; cold weather may cause the plant to drop its leaves. If you are planning on testing the cold tolerance of Viking, grow it in a pot to start with, and move it somewhere sheltered overnight, or give it protection. This is called hardening off, and helps the plant acclimatise to temperatures.
PLANTING : Plant in fertile moist soil in an open airy location. If growing as a potted plant, pot into slightly larger containers as the plant grows, in standard potting mix.
CARE : Poinsettias are short day plants and will begin to colour up when the daylight length get shorter. You can read more about this in our Plants & Light post If you have skin sensitivity avoid getting the sap on skin as it may cause irritation.
MATURE HEIGHT & WIDTH :   30-60cm H x 60cm W potted, 2-3m planted.
YOUR PLANTS : These are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
You can see an example in the image gallery.
