Potato Nicola - seed potatoes
Nicola is a versatile and tasty potato that is tailormade for both boiling and roasting, and really comes into its own for salads. Generous with her tubers, which also store well so you can enjoy them over a longer period.
Nicola is also borderline frost-tender, bred for warmer climates - so mulch her well in colder ones. Seed potatoes are disease and virus free, and produce bigger yields, than supermarket or greengrocer potatoes for eating.
Potato Nicola
APPEARANCE : White-skinned oval variety with waxy cream flesh. Good all-rounder for roasting, panfrying, and boiling; perfect salad potato. Stores well, generous with tubers, good disease resistance.
PLANTING : Potatoes grow in almost any soil, and they are great for breaking up hard compacted beds; but they really love sandy with a high humus content. They require nitrogen so add manure and garden compost to the soil before planting.
CARE : Water regularly to help it establish and keep it growing strong. Keep the bed weed-free and pick off any snails or beetles. New shoots will appear in 2-3 weeks; when this happens mound up the soil around the shoots to keep the tubers out of the light and encourage new tubers to form. Lift potatoes when mature plants begin to die. Leave freshly harvested potatoes in the sun for a day to prevent bruising, then store in dark and cool conditions
