Sarracenia Scarlet Belle - carnivorous pitcher plant
Calling all fans of the macabre and gory! It looks like a bloodshot eyeball. It eats live bugs and ants.
They fall into the pitchers, unable to crawl back out, and are dissolved in acid juices. AAARRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!
Sarracenia leucophylla x psittacina, S. x wrigleyana 'Scarlet Belle' - pitcher plant
APPEARANCE : Carnivorous plant growing in a low rosette of hooded white tubes, each veined heavily with blood red. The colour deepens in autumn. The tubes are lined with hairs which prevent insects which fall in, from getting out.
USE FOR: Wetland and bog plant for cool-winter areas; interesting and unusual indoor plant.
PLANTING: Plant in acid soil, ideally equal parts sphagnum moss or peat moss, horticultural sand, and perlite; called Pocosin in nature. Any potting mix needs to be extremely low in phosphorus and nitrogen so don't fertilise these plants. Plants need a cool winter, at least one month of low-single digit temperatures, and can survive snow and ice.
CARE: Keep the soil wet through the growing seasons, the easiest way is to sit the pot in a saucer of rainwater. In mid-autumn, drain the saucer and keep the soil damp until spring, to give the plant a rest.
HEIGHT & WIDTH: 10 - 20cm H
YOUR PLANTS : These are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
You can see an example in the image gallery.
