This very striking broad-leaved airplant adds a new colourway to the traditional silver-green-grey of most of these plants. Its flowering spike is more like a bromeliad, a tall stem of coloured leaves shaded rich peach-apricot. The true flowers are a vibrant dark purple and nestle at the base of the leaves.

Tillandsia riohondoensis - airplant

APPEARANCE :  A curly silver-green rosette of broader long leaves, more like a bromeliad than a common airplant, develops a taller rosette flowering spike of peach-apricot colouration. The deep purple true flowers are tucked deep in the centre of the peach rosette spike.
You might see this called Rio Hondo, but it has been decided that this plant is a species not a cultivar, so riohondoensis it is. Rio Hondo means deep river. You might also see plants called T. capitata Peach or Guatemalan Peach. Taxonomy is complex!
USE FOR :  Tropical gardens or indoors. Attach plants to a piece of driftwood for a natural centrepiece. Hanging air plants in glass terrariums allows for plenty of air circulation and makes an attractive display.
PLANTING: In the wild in Guatemala they used to grow on volcanic rocks alongside waterfalls, in very hot locations. It is now believed they only grow in commercial nurseries. Replicating a warm environment with dappled shade and regular misting will help this airplant feel at home. Air plants love well lit areas with moderate humidity and plenty of air circulation. Avoid direct sunlight
CARE: Spritz plants with a hand sprayer daily during the warmer months then weekly through winter. Plants that are exposed to dry conditions such as heaters and air conditioners will need a good weekly soaking. Not sure if you need to soak your plants? Check to see if the leaves are beginning to curl, this is the first sign that the plant need water.  Sit plants in water for 2-3 hours or overnight. Mature happy plants will often clump into large specimens with multiple pups – mini-plants at the base - which you can leave in place or pot up for friends
HEIGHT & WIDTH:  20-80cm H
YOUR PLANTS : These are tubestock-sized plants supplied bare-root, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. You can see an example in the image gallery
