Toad lilies are gorgeous airy plants for moist shady places, where they will send up long slender stems topped with dainty freckled stars of white and purple.

Lasiocarpa, the amethyst toad lily, has three broad blue-purple petals and three slender white freckled petals - a magnet for bees and butterflies; and bigger broader leaves up to 30cm long for a lush effect.

It's also happy flowering in sun, unlike its relatives, which means you can try this out around your garden until you find the spot where it feels most at home. You can see them growing in the wild here.
