Tall perennial topped with clusters of fluffy white flowers, happy in dappled shade and any kind of soil. Long-prized as a valuable medicinal plant by herbalists, now more often used to attract bees and earthworms, to improve fruit set and soil health

Valeriana officinalis - common valerian

DESCRIPTION: Tall bushy herbaceous perennial with tall pale pink to white clusters of flowers. Makes an attractive addition to a cottage style garden; and a useful plant for veggie patches.
PLANTING: Sow seeds in Spring-early Summer at 20C directly into final position or in seed trays/pots, and keep moist and shaded. Don't cover the seeds with soil. Thin plants one they develop 2-4 leaves and are easily handled. Plant in good quality soil for best flowering, in sun or part shade.
CARE: Water seedlings regularly until established and continue to provide water especially during dry spells. Mulch plants to keep the shallow roots cool in summer. For an extra long flowering season, remove spent blooms and feed with liquid fertiliser. Chop it back to ground level in autumn.
