We were hoping this fruit was the secret to eternal youth, but instead it's even more fantastic - a sweet cross between blackberry, raspberry, and dewberry. Why don't you see this fruit in the shops? Because it only keeps for a few days after picking - which makes it the perfect fruit for home gardeners to enjoy fresh from the bush. A secret worth keeping!

Rubus caesius - youngberry

APPEARANCE : Youngberries are a hybrid of blackberry, raspberry and dewberry. Long, almost thornless, canes produce red-purple berries in summer-autumn. These plants are vigorous and self fertile with excellent disease resistance; planting more than one often results in better yield. Note : these plants may have some small slender prickles on new growth.
USE FOR : Grow your own fruit for eating fresh or making into jams, pies, purees.
CLIMATE : Frost hardy, sun tolerant. Shade from strong wind and hot afternoon sun.
PLANTING : The canes are semi-upright; plant them against a trellis or taut wires, train them up until they reach the top, then tie in new growth pointing down until you reach the bottom of the trellis. This helps increase fruit yields and takes less space than training horizontally. Plant in full sun into any rich, fertile, well-drained soil, even clay. Space around 50cm apart and plant quite shallow, around 10 cm deep.
CARE : Mulch and water regularly until plant becomes established and keep well-watered at the roots when in flower and fruit. Prune the growing tips in summer to encourage branching, and cut out old canes in winter as they fruit on last year’s stems.
HEIGHT & WIDTH : Average of 1.5 m H x 1 - 2 m W.
YOUR PLANTS : These are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
