Zingiber officinale - edible ginger

APPEARANCE: Lush tropical herbaceous perennial with glossy evergreen foliage. White buds open into yellow flowers; or red buds open into red flowers. Attractive garden plant grown for its edible tangy roots used in cooking and medicine.
USE IN: Perfect for tropical gardens and containers in shaded areas.
CLIMATE :Subtropical or tropical is ideal. Protect from frost.
PLANTING: Plant in rich free draining soil in part to full shade. The optimal planting time is early spring, plants then grow through spring and summer ready for harvesting the root from the start of autumn into early winter. Earlier harvest means milder flavour.
CARE: Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks. Water regularly in growth, especially during dry periods. Prune stems to the ground if plants become untidy, new shoots will replace those removed. Fertilise regularly using an organic liquid fertiliser or compost for lush new growth. Plants will be dormant through winter.
