Grow your own hot sweet spice for cooking - and while you wait, enjoy the lush leaves and golden flowers of this subtropical perennial. Organic ginger root can sell for up to $90/kg in the supermarket so it's worth growing your own!

Here's some info on preparing and eating ginger from the Australian Ginger organisation.
Zingiber officinale - edible ginger

APPEARANCE: Lush tropical herbaceous perennial with glossy evergreen foliage. White buds open into yellow flowers. Attractive garden plant grown for its edible tangy roots used in cooking and medicine.
USE IN: Perfect for tropical gardens and containers in shaded areas. Protect from frost.
PLANTING: Plant in free draining soil in a part-full shade location.
CARE: Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks. Water regularly during dry periods. Prune stems to the ground if plants become untidy, new shoots will replace those removed. Fertilise regularly using an organic liquid fertiliser for lush new growth.
HEIGHT & WIDTH: 1 m H x 30 - 50 cm W.
YOUR PLANTS: These plants are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide. You can see an example in the image gallery.
