This lovely large native tree grows in the wild from Cooktown QLD to Northern Rivers NSW, so it should be happy in most places along the east coast and worth a punt further south. It likes low coastal regions, rainforest fringes, and regular rainfall, and often grows alongside kauri pine.

The long white tails of flowers appear from midwinter into spring to feed happy pollinators and birds .

This tree is the master of disguise. It's easily mistaken in flower for ivory curl (Buckinghamia), brown silky oak (Grevillea baileyana), or even macadamia.

When woody pods appear after the flowers, they resemble miniature versions of those on Illawara flame trees (Brachychiton). It disguises itself further when it's not flowering, as broad glossy oval leaves often change and mature into deeply lobed leaves resembling those of kangaroo ferns or firewheel trees (Stenocarpus).
