lemon grass, lemongrass
Cymbopogon flexuosus
DESCRIPTION: Clumping fast-growing grass producing purple flower spikes. The stalks and leaves have a fresh lemon flavour. Lemon Grass is drought tolerant once established. Ready to eat in 12 weeks.
PLANTING: Spring-Summer and Autumn in warmer locations. Germination is a little hit or miss with lemon grass so it's best to sow seeds into trays and transplant when plants are approximately 10cm tall. Plant in a full sun to partly shaded location in free draining soil.
USE IN: Brew stalks in hot water for a refreshing tea. Essential for creating authentic Thai dishes. Remove stalks near the base of the plant and chop finely.
CARE: Water seedlings regularly until established and apply mulch to help retain moisture in the soil. Avoid over watering. Apply liquid fertiliser regularly for best results. Protect plants from frost.
