The tree with all the gifts - pretty white flowers, tasty black fruit, glossy aromatic leaves, rusty-red bark. It's slowgrowing, making it ideal for smaller-sized gardens, very handsome, and seems to be happy growing in most soils and climates.

Description

Luma apiculata, Myrtus luma Chilean myrtle

APPEARANCE: A South American tree myrtle with white cup-shaped flowers in early summer followed by purple-black berries, edible bushtucker (although we have not tasted them ourselves). Leaves are dark green and aromatic. Rusty tan bark. Slowgrowing and very long-lived
USES: Feature planting, sensory gardens, backyard and street tree, bonsai, honey production, bushtucker.
LOCATION: Plant in full sun or part shade in any good well-drained garden soil.
CARE: Water regularly during the first 8-12 weeks until the plant is established, then during dry periods until the plant develops a trunk. Drought tolerant. Prune in autumn following leaf drop for prolific summer flowering and a dense growth habit; or deadhead after first flowers to keep an elegant shape and encourage a second flower flush. Fertilise using a slow release fertiliser twice yearly, thrive in clay soils.
