Melastoma affine - blue tongue
APPEARANCE: Native to Australian rainforest areas, this fast growing shrub has mauve flowers most of the year, peaking during spring. Flowers are followed by edible fruit with deeply coloured purple flesh, named 'blue tongue' as the fruit stains the tongue blue.
USES: Great for small hedges, pots and feature planting.
PLANTING: Plant in well drained soil in a sunny position. Mulch and water well until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks.
CARE: Tip prune regularly while young to encourage dense growth and continued flowering. Reapply mulch and apply a slow release fertiliser during spring. Water regularly during dry periods and protect from frost.
HEIGHT & WIDTH: 1.5 m H x up to 1.2 m W.
YOUR PLANTS: These plants are tube-stock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The average size of your plants will be 15 -25 cm including the pot height of 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
