Strawberry trees are rugged attractive little trees for smaller gardens and courtyards. With cream flowers, cherry-like ornamental fruits, gorgeous cinnamon-curl bark, and evergreen leaves they look great all year round.
There's a fan of these growing at the National Arboretum in Canberra, if you're wondering about its frost hardiness; and a tree in Yackandandah cemetery that was planted in 1870s, if you're wondering how long they live.
Arbutus canariensis - Canary Islands strawberry tree, madrone
APPEARANCE: Mediterranean small tree or large shrub with a branched open canopy; and evergreen foliage, copper-tinted when young. Cream-green bell flowers appear summer-autumn, followed by yellow-orange berry-like ornamental fruits in autumn-winter. The cinnamon coloured bark curls off to reveal lime green fresh bark beneath.USE FOR : Ideal for street planting, feature planting, small and urban gardens. Berries attract birds. The roots are non invasive making it a popular with landscapers.
CLIMATE : Frost hardy to -10C, heat tolerant, drought tolerant.
PLANTING : Plant in moist well-drained soil in a sheltered spot..
CARE : Mulch and water well until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks. Prune regularly to maintain a dense rounded growth habit and fertilise with slow release native fertiliser during spring.
HEIGHT & WIDTH : 2-4m H x 2-4m W.
