Fast-growing large tropical fern with big fronds to make an impact in the shade border. The mature fronds are a handsome deep green with tones of bronze; the new fronds in the centre of each plant emerge deep rust-red, like lava at the centre of a green volcano.

Blechnum brasiliense 'Volcano' - dwarf Brazilian tree fern

DESCRIPTION: Fast growing large fern from South America. New fronds emerge deep rust-red then mature to dark glossy green, forming an arching fountain of deeply divided leaves.
USE IN: Tropical gardens in shade beds and underplanting. Suited to containers and indoor gardens.
PLANTING: Plant carefully ensuring the crown of the fern is above the soil line. Will tolerate wet feet. Remove old fronds to keep plants looking fresh and avoid disease. Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks.
CARE: Protect from frost and keep moist during dry periods. Water every second day during dry periods. Ferns thrive in humid conditions. Apply a slow release fertiliser during spring and a liquid based fertiliser every 4 weeks during the warmer months, take care to dilute your solution to half the recommended dose to avoid burn. Re-pot every 2 - 3 years to keep soil fresh and full of nutrients. The best time to pot is in the cooler months when the plant is dormant.
HEIGHT & WIDTH:  1 - 1.5m H x 0.5 - 1m W.
YOUR PLANTS: These plants are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The average size of your plants will be 15 -25 cm including the pot height of 80mm high and 42 mm wide. May be supplied as 'plugs', slightly smaller than our usual tubestock but with a healthy root system ready for planting or potting on.
