Description

Metrosideros 'Spring Fire' - New Zealand Christmas bush

DESCRIPTION: A large shrub to small tree with bright lime green soft new growth, large dark green leaves year round, and eye-catching fluffy orange-red pincushion flowers during spring and intermittently through the year. Slower growing than other metrosideros so needs less clipping.
PLANTING: Plant in full sun for rich foliage colour and prolific flowering. Tolerates part shade; might survive a light frost. Thrives in free draining soil.
USES: Salt and wind tolerant, ideal for sea-side planting, bird attracting and makes a great hedge or on its own as a specimen plant. Site away from pipework as roots can be troublesome.
CARE: Well drained clay loams or sandy soil with a neutral to acid pH. Prune lightly following after flowering is finished, or clip to maintain a lower hedge height. Fertilise with native-plant fertiliser early spring and at planting.
