Big velvet-heart leaves, soft to touch, and striking contrasting white ribs make this subtropical south American beauty a definite showstopper. New leaves look like they are covered in a layer of sparkling glittery fairy dust. Keep her warm (over 12C for preference) and moisty-humid (regular misting if you don't have a tropical climate) and she'll be right.

Philodendron gloriosum - velvet philodendron
APPEARANCE:   Tropical slow-growing foliage plant from South America with huge dark green evergreen leaves, soft to touch in a long tapering heart-shape, with a distinctive white central rib and veins. Young leaves are a brighter apple green with pale pink ribs. Mature leaves can reach almost a metre long in the wild. This philodendron produces side roots that will grow along the surface of the soil.
USE IN: Tropical gardens and well lit subtropical patio areas. Suited to borders, undergrowth planting (where it makes good groundcover) and containers. Indoor decor.
CLIMATE : Suited to warm climates, high humidity, and sheltered areas. Protect from cold and draughts - keep over 7C minimum and preferably above 12C.
PLANTING :  A partly shaded position in the garden or home, out of direct sunlight (which can burn the leaves) but with bright light. Plant in a free draining soil rich in organic matter.  A potting mix rich with peat moss or humus is ideal.
CARE: Water regularly during the first 12 weeks until the plant is established; then afterwards when the soil surface is dry. Water less in winter. Mist often in dry locations and when growing indoors. Feed with fertiliser for foliage plants monthly spring-autumn, to ensure lush growth. Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust if necessary.
YOUR PLANTS : These are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
You can see an example in the image gallery.
