Telopea speciosissima - waratah
DESCRIPTION: Large shrub with vibrant red pincushion-like flowers spring to early summer.PLANTING: Year round in warm areas and in spring, once the danger of frost has passed in cooler areas. Sow seeds by gently pressing them into seed raising mix or direct in final position. Cover with a light layer of soil and water evenly. A sprinkle of Mr Fothergill's seed starter granules will boost germination. Transplant at 7cm avoiding disturbing the roots. For best flowering, plant in a full sun location. Suited to large containers. Prefers free draining-sandy soil.
CARE: Water seedlings regularly until established and continue to provide water especially during dry spells. Once plants are fully established, water regularly during spring and summer and very little during winter and autumn when the plants are dormant. Mulch plants to retain moisture in the soil. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser during spring - Waratahs are phosphorus-sensitive so the P ratio of the fertiliser needs to be under 3%. Prune stems once flowering has finished to enjoy more flowers next season.
