At one time endangered in the wild, like the headland zieria, with fewer than 500 plants known. Happily, National government recovery plans over the past decade are securing the future of this pretty little native. It's still vulnerable, which is why preserving it in gardens is important. It's worth growing too - abundant white flowers, lemon-scented leaves, and it grows alongside gum trees.
Zieria citriodora - lemon zieria
APPEARANCE: Dense-growing Australian native groundcover endemic to a few locations in NSW and VIC. Neat small glossy green foliage is lemon-scented when crushed; pale pink buds open to small four-petalled white flowers in late winter to early summer which attract beneficial pollinators.
USE FOR: Groundcover, under trees, alongside paths. Attracts bees and other beneficial insects in wildlife gardens. Suitable for pots and containers.
PLANTING : Prefers dappled shade or filtered light protected from hot afternoon sun. Plant in well-draining, sandy or gravelly soils. In the wild it grows in eucalypt forests so try it as an underplanting to your gum trees.
CARE: Mulch and water regularly until established. Prune as required, and fertilise plants growing in very poor soils. Use a low phosphate fertiliser formulated for natives. Very disease resistant; frost resistant once established.
HEIGHT & WIDTH: 15 cm x 1m.
YOUR PLANTS: These plants are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
