Alpinia mutica - small shell ginger, false cardamom
APPEARANCE : Lush under-story native ginger with glossy evergreen foliage. Creamy-white flowers with golden yellow centres appear in summer, followed by orange berries. Commonly called false cardamom, this is related to root ginger and not to cardamom.USE FOR : Perfect for tropical gardens and containers in shaded areas.
CLIMATE : Subtropical and tropical gardens are ideal. Protect from frost. In overnight frost the plant will die back but if soil is well mulched the rootball may survive.
PLANTING : Plant in free draining soil in sun to shade. Flowering will be reduced in shadier sites.
CARE: Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks. Water regularly during dry periods. Prune stems to the ground if plants become untidy, new shoots will replace those removed. Fertilise regularly using an organic liquid fertiliser for lush new growth.
HEIGHT & WIDTH: 1.5-2 m H x 1-2 m W.
YOUR PLANTS : These are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
You can see an example in the image gallery.
