Dinky-di banksia, especially for southern states where humidity is lower. It's a gorgeous groundcover, fitting into Japanese-style gardens thanks to the pine-tree-like layered branches; and into native gardens thanks to those iconic yellow cones that pop up in the darker colder months just when we (and the wildlife) need them.

Banksia spinulosa 'Coastal Cushion'

APPEARANCE: Native groundcovering shrub with yellow cylindrical flowers in spring, autumn and winter, and slender tufty green needlelike leaves.
USES: Year-round foliage shrub. Good weed-suppressor. Tolerates salt spray - good for southern coastal gardens. Wildlife refuge and source of nectar.
PLANTING: Plant in a well drained soil, neutral to acid pH, in a sunny spot. Doesn't like wet feet or high humidity, though more tolerant of moister soils than the lower-growing Birthday Candles.
CARE:Feed with a slow release native fertiliser during spring - Banksia is very phosphorus-sensitive so the P ratio of the fertiliser needs to be under 3%. Naturally dense and bushy but can become denser if pruned after flowering. Water carefully to establish it - don't let it dry out but don't overwater it. Accounts differ as to how much frost it can stand so shelter your plants for the first couple of years, especially in exposed sites.
HEIGHT & WIDTH: 50 cm H x 1.5m W.
YOUR PLANTS: These are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide
