Grevillea banksii alba - white silky oak
Big bold native, the parent of many favourite Grevillea varieties, and often found in coastal locations in the wild which makes white silky oak a great front-line beach garden plant. Large creamy-white flowers appear in winter-spring.
If you're looking for brown silky oak you want Grevillea baileyana, and for silky oak Grevillea robusta.
Grevillea banksii alba - white silky oak
APPEARANCE: Large bushy variable shrub or sometimes small tree, with silvery-green leaves, and cream-white large flowers mainly in winter-spring and intermittently through the year.
USE FOR : Feature shrub, native gardens, informal hedging, wildlife gardens to attract native birds. Ideal coastal garden plant.
PLANTING : Well drained neutral-acid pH soil, sandy for preference. Tolerates dry spells but needs protection from frosts.
CARE: Cut back gently if needed to keep it in shape. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser during early spring when buds form - banksii grevilleas are phosphorus-sensitive so the P ratio of the fertiliser needs to be under 3%.
