Imagine hiking your way through a hot, steamy, densely-foliaged southeast Asian jungle and stumbling across one of these beauties nestled into the shady moss on the forest floor. What a find! Do your best to give it similar conditions in your home - humid, sheltered, warm - and you may be rewarded with long delicate stems of pure white flowers as well as those strikingly coloured metallic patterned leaves that give the plant its name.

Ludisia discolor - jewel orchid, precious orchid

APPEARANCE :  Native to South East Asia, this orchid is found naturally on the forest floor. Grown primarily for the near black to copper gold foliage, red undersides and pinkish-white markings on fleshy stems. Produces delicate white flower spikes which last for up to a month.
USE FOR :  Tropical gardens and indoors.
PLANTING:  They are ideal for growing indoors as they need some filtered light but not direct sun. In temperatures over 30C increase the shade and humidity. This orchid is best grown in shallow pots as the roots are shallow; or in hanging baskets.
CARE: They need well-draining soil, chunky orchid bark and potting mix combined is recommended. Allow them to dry out between watering; feed them with dilute orchid fertiliser once a fortnight when they are growing.
YOUR PLANTS : These are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80 mm x 42 mm wide. You can see an example in the image gallery
