Stunning showy tropical iris from Central and South America, with three big blue petals, leopardskin patterned in the centre. The flowers are each shortlived but produced over a long season, like day lilies, and on long slender stems. If you grow it in a pot, choose a large one.

Neomarica caerulea, Trimezia caerulea - giant blue walking iris

APPEARANCE : Grassy clumping green plant from Central and South America with tall straight flower stems in summer. Purple-blue flowers of three large petals are patterned in the centre with brown and white. Produces new plants from the tips of old flowering stems - so it 'walks' itself to new locations.
USE FOR : Borders and edging, pots and containers.
CLIMATE : It likes a frost-free, humid climate like in its native home.
PLANTING : Plant in free-draining acid soil in sun, shade or dappled shade.
CARE: Mulch after planting, ideally with generous amounts of leafmould, to retain moisture and regulate soil temperatures as the young plant establishes. Water regularly. Snip off flowerstems after flowering if you don't want the plant to 'walk'. Feed in spring with fertiliser for native plants, as in the wild it grows in impoverished leaf-litter soils low in nutrients.
HEIGHT: 45 - 60 cm
YOUR PLANTS : These are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
You can see an example in the image gallery.
