Nerine bowdenii - Jersey lily, Guernsey lily
DESCRIPTION:Grassy clumps of leaves, followed by a cluster of starry bright pink flowers on long stems. Good cut flower. This species has an RHS Award for all-round garden excellence.
USE IN: Plant in a rockery, grassy slope, or group closely in pots for bright spring flowering colour.
PLANTING: Bulbs thrive in free draining soil. Prepare clay soil using a clay-breaker and add well composted manure or mulch to help with drainage. Add grit or gravel to your planting holes if your soil is heavy, or plant up into containers. Cover soil with a good layer of mulch to help regulate soil temperature. Nerines need an open sunny location or filtered sun to flower. Plant level with the soil surface unless you get frost, then plant with 5cm of soil over the bulb and mulch in winter.
CARE: CARE: Once planted, water the soil to set the bulb in place. Water and feed fortnightly once the flower spike appears and the leaves emerge. Once flowering is finished stop watering and leave plants to die back, it's not the prettiest sight but don't be tempted to trim the yellowing foliage. The nutrients are being drawn back into the bulbs for next year. When the bulbs die back completely remove spent foliage, mulch to keep cool in very hot locations, and leave in place for next season.
CLIMATE: Frost-tolerant to -5C if mulched
Contains 3 bulbs.
