This is very exciting! Our azalea range is always popular for their bright flowers, often over a long season - but for native-garden purists they are a no-no.

Happily, this beautiful relative is 100% native, the only native Rhododendron in fact.

You'll find it in the wild up in the top end, in far north QLD cloud forests, where it loves the regular soft rain, the rich acid soil, and the dappled shade from taller trees.

Sometimes it grows in cracks in the rocks, or as an epiphyte in tree branches - so although it loves humid air and plenty of rain, it doesn't like to have soggy socks. Plant it alongside native bird's nest ferns which like similar conditions.

Rhododendron lochiae - native rhododendron

APPEARANCE : Native rhododendron with deep green oval leaves, red satiny bell flowers in clusters from spring to autumn. Slow-growing
USE FOR :  Display of flowering colour; feature planting, native gardens, container growing.
CLIMATE : Frost free sheltered spots.
PLANTING : This rhododendron loves dappled shade and filtered light, even all-day shade (though this will reduce flowering a little). Plant in a free-draining moist acid soil rich in organic matter. Mix in perlite or vermiculate to help with drainage; or try an orchid potting mix if you are growing in pots.
CARE : Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks. Continue to water on a regular basis for the first twelve months to ensure the plant becomes fully established. Water during dry spells for good flowering. Like azaleas, these have fine roots close to he surface so avoid disturbing the soil around where possible.
HEIGHT & WIDTH: to 3m H x 2m W in the wild but often 1m x 1m in garden settings, especially south of its native range.
YOUR PLANTS : These are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
You can see an example in the image gallery.
