Camellia japonica 'Unryu'
APPEARANCE : Evergreen shrub with glossy green leaves and cup-shaped red flowers with golden stamens inside, about the size of a cricket ball across. Japonica varieties flower later in the season and are more cool-climate tolerant. Unryu is grown for its distinctive zigzag stems; mature plants are bushy all the way to the ground.
USES : Suited to feature planting and container planting.
PLANTING : Sunny or partly shaded position with morning or afternoon sun. Shelter from strong winds and exposed sites. Plant in well drained soil prepared with mulch. Water regularly during the first 12 weeks or until the plant is established. Tolerates frost once established.
CARE : Mulch and water well, prune after flowering and fertilise using camellia specific feed.
