Solanum jasminoides, Solanum laxum - potato vine

APPEARANCE : Twining vigorous climber producing clusters of starry white or very pale blue five-petalled flowers with golden eyes during warmer months, which are followed by black berries. Semi-evergreen - deciduous in cold locations, evergreen in mild frost-free ones. Related to potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant.
ORIGIN : Native to Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay
USE FOR : Allow to ramble over a trellis or train along a fence. Grow up through trees or taller shrubs. Berries are poisonous so avoid gardens with inquisitive children or pets
CLIMATE : Frost tolerant once established in sheltered locations.
PLANTING : Plant in a full sun to partly shaded position in the garden. Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks.
CARE : Prune long stems in late winter (mild areas) or early spring (colder ones) to encourage flowering side shoots. Apply a slow release fertiliser during spring.
HEIGHT & WIDTH : 4-6m H x 4-6m W.
